Oud Candle Care Tips

When it comes to caring for your oud candle there are a number of do's and don'ts that play a massive role in the longevity of your candle. This guide will give you a break down of all the information you need to ensure your Nuhr candle burns and lasts longer.

1. Trimming your wick

One of the simplest yet overlooked steps is cutting the wick, the wick must be trimmed 1/4 inch before each burn. You can use a wick trimmer or a pair of scissors. This will ensure your oud candle burns longer. The wick should always measure just under a centimetre in order to stop the wick being too long.

2. Candle tunnelling

We know how exciting it is lighting up a new candle! however, did you know it is imperative that you allow your candle to burn 3-4 hours on the first use, or until the wax liquifies and is completely melted on the surface and touching the edges of your glass. This is important because a candle has memory, yes memory, the candle will form a memory ring and will stay in this position resulting in the candle tunnelling downwards. Tunnelling is where the wick burns straight down around the wax, creating a tunnel. Tunnelling should be avoided because it causes the candle to burn unevenly, leaving unburnt wax around the border.

3. Centre the wick

If you notice that the wick has moved during burning you can simply re centre the wick before the next burn. use a pair of tweezers or your hand to gently guide the wick back to the centre. This ensures your oud candle burns evenly and towards one side. If your wick gets too long or moves it is important to trim and recentre the wick as a slanted wick could heat up the glass too quickly causing it to crack.

4. The 4 hour rule

You should never leave your oud candle burning for more than 4 hours! This is vital because once you go past the 4 hour mark the wax begins to get extremely hot which results in the reduction of fragrance and causes the black marks around the glass due to the smoke.

5. Candle Location

The location of your oud candle plays an important role in how well it burns. Never place your oud candle near windows, air vents or places where there is a draft, this will cause your candle to burn unevenly or be extinguished too early. Always burn your candle on a non flammable surface and never leave a lit candle unattended.
